How much does an AI receptionist cost is one of the most common questions we get, and it is hard to answer with one number, because providers price it in very different ways. This is the plain-language version, so you can compare like for like.

The three ways AI receptionists are priced

Per minute. You pay for the minutes the AI spends on calls. Easy to start, but the bill moves with your call volume, and a busy month can surprise you.

Per call. You pay a set amount for each call, usually with a bucket of calls included and a charge for every call past it. Predictable until you get busy.

Flat monthly. You pay one steady fee for a set level of use. Easiest to budget, which is why most owners land here once volume is steady.

The cheap sticker price often is not the real price

A lot of the low per-minute rates you see belong to developer platforms, not finished receptionists. The advertised number covers one piece, and the rest stacks on top.

Take Vapi. Its platform fee starts at $0.05 per minute, but that sits on top of separate charges for transcription, the language model, the voice and the phone line, so the real all-in cost lands several times higher than the headline (Vapi pricing). Bland advertises $0.12 to $0.14 per minute, then its Build plan adds a $299 per month platform fee plus per-minute transfer charges, with texting, web chat and scheduling held back for its Enterprise tier (Bland pricing). These are capable tools, but they are built for developers who will assemble and maintain the agent themselves. That engineering time is a real cost that never appears on the pricing page.

Watch the overages

Per-call plans can read cheap until you count the calls. Luna, for example, lists a $299 per month plan that includes 50 calls, then charges $3.99 for every call after that (Luna pricing). Fifty calls is a slow week for a lot of businesses, so the number on the plan is rarely the number on the invoice. We go deeper on this in the hidden costs of AI voice agents.

The hidden costs to ask about

  • Setup and onboarding fees
  • Charges to connect your calendar, CRM or booking system
  • Overage rates once you pass your plan
  • Whether text and web chat cost extra on top of voice
  • Whether changes and retuning are included or billed each time

AI against a human and an answering service

Option How you pay Around the clock Every channel Watch out for
In-house receptionist Salary and benefits No No One call at a time, no nights or weekends
Answering service Per minute or per call, often USD Often Rarely Scripted, exchange-rate risk for Canadian businesses
Developer platform Per minute plus stacked fees Yes Sometimes You build, tune and maintain it yourself
Managed AI, like HiBell Predictable flat monthly Yes Yes Confirm tuning and support are included

How to compare fairly

Add up the all-in monthly cost for your real volume, across every channel, with setup spread over a year. Then set that next to what one missed call costs you, which we break down in the real cost of a missed call. Where HiBell fits

HiBell is a managed service with predictable pricing quoted up front. Setup, tuning, monitoring and changes are part of it, not add-ons you find later, and there is no per-minute meter running in the background. You get voice, text, web chat and social in one place, and a team that keeps the agent sharp using your real calls.

See where your calls and messages are leaking, and what it takes to answer every one.
