The price on the pricing page is rarely the price on the invoice. AI voice tools are some of the worst offenders, because the cheapest-looking number usually covers one piece and lets the rest stack up quietly. Here is where the money actually hides, using each provider’s own published pricing, so you can ask the right questions before you sign.

Trap 1: per-minute platforms that stack costs

Developer platforms advertise a low per-minute rate that is only the hosting fee. Everything else is billed separately. Vapi, for example, starts at $0.05 per minute, but on top of that you pay for transcription, the language model, the voice and the phone line, and the Pro tier carries a $999 per month minimum (Vapi pricing). The all-in cost lands several times higher than the headline, and you only find out once real calls are flowing.

Trap 2: platform fees and transfer charges

Bland advertises $0.12 to $0.14 per minute, then its Build plan adds a $299 per month platform fee, and transfers are billed per minute on top (Bland pricing). The per-minute rate is the part people compare. The monthly fee and the transfer charges are the part that shapes the actual bill.

Trap 3: the developer time nobody prices

Bland, Vapi and Retell are powerful, but they are developer platforms, not finished receptionists. Retell runs about $0.07 per minute for its voice engine and $0.08 to $0.15 all-in (provider comparison), which looks cheap until you count the part that never appears on a pricing page: someone has to build the agent, connect your calendar and CRM, test it, and keep tuning it as your business changes. That is either your evenings or a developer’s invoice.

Trap 4: per-call overages

Done-for-you tools can hide the cost in the call count instead. Luna lists a $299 per month plan that includes just 50 calls, then charges $3.99 for every call after that, and its $599 plan includes 150 calls with $2.99 overage after (Luna pricing). Fifty calls is a slow week for many businesses, so the plan price is a floor, not the total.

Trap 5: features behind the Enterprise wall

The last surprise is what is not included at all. On Bland, texting, web chat and appointment scheduling, plus warm and live transfers, are reserved for the Enterprise tier (Bland pricing). If you expected an omnichannel receptionist and priced the entry plan, the channels you actually need may sit behind a sales call.

The quick reference

Provider Type Headline price What stacks on top
Vapi Developer platform From $0.05/min Transcription, LLM, voice and telephony billed separately; $999/mo minimum on Pro
Bland Developer platform $0.12 to $0.14/min $299/mo platform fee on Build, per-minute transfers, SMS and chat Enterprise-only
Retell Developer platform ~$0.07/min engine $0.08 to $0.15/min all-in, plus the time to build and maintain it yourself
Luna Done-for-you $299/mo 50 calls included, then $3.99 per call

Figures reflect each provider’s published pricing in 2026 and can change. Always confirm current pricing on their site.

What transparent pricing looks like

Clear pricing has three traits. One number that covers the whole thing, so there is no per-minute meter running behind the scenes. Every channel included, not just voice. And no surprise overage when you have a busy month. If a quote does not give you those three, ask why.

How HiBell prices it

HiBell is flat and quoted up front in Canadian dollars. Voice, text, web chat and social are included, setup and ongoing tuning are part of the service, and there is no per-minute meter or per-call overage waiting for a busy month. You know the number before you start. For the wider comparison, see the top 5 AI receptionists in Canada.
